LANCASTER CHRISTIAN WRITERS HOST SUPER SATURDAY ON MARCH 24, 2012

Lancaster Christian Writers is sponsoring an amazing yet affordable opportunity for aspiring and current writers at their fifth annual Super Saturday on March 24, 2012, from 8:30a.m.-4:00 p.m. This one-day conference, held at Lancaster Bible College's Sebastian Hall, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, PA 17601, offers a full day of workshops taught by top industry professionals in both fiction and non-fiction fields. An early registration price of $40 is due by March 20 and includes lunch and LCW membership. Registrations after March 20 and walk-ins the day of the conference are $50.

Fiction conference faculty consist of award-winning novelists Gayle Roper, Mike Dellosso, Tracy Higley, and Wanda Dyson. Non-fiction faculty include publisher, author and conference director Marlene Bagnull, author and marketing expert Karen Whiting, children's author and artist Carol Wedeven, and freelance author and corporate editor Carol Cool.

Workshops cover such topics as:

  • Themes in Fiction: Writing More Than a Story
  • Topic, Theme & the Writing Tree: Crafting a Cohesive Skeleton to Hold Your Manuscript Together
  • Secrets of Dramatic Tension: Creating a Page Turner Your Reader Can't Put Down

A conference bookstore will offer a wide variety of writer resources and faculty titles. Conference attendees can get personal consultations with faculty on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Lancaster Christian Writers welcomes writers of all churches and denominations and of all levels and genres. Monthly meetings offer opportunities for manuscript critique, networking with other writers, and occasional workshops and guest authors. Here is a plug for the Writers' Conference that I attend each year -- I am a member of the board and am due in Grove City the day before the conference. However, if you want to carpool -- I am sure arrangements can be made for you to room in the dorm a day early.

Come to the 55th annual St. Davids Christian Writers' Conference, "Writers Under Construction," and let our instructors provide you some rock-solid advice on which to build! From June 19 to 23, these outstanding authors and editors will be joining us on the scenic Grove City College campus in Grove City, PA:  

  • James Watkins has authored, co-authored, or edited 16 books and over two thousand articles--in addition to keeping up his Hope & Humor web site.  His books include Writers on Writing and Communicate to Change Lives in Person and Print.  James is also an editor with Wesleyan Publishing House, and will teach workshops on "Writing with Banana Peels" and "Writing for an Audience of Three Billion."
  • Melanie Rigney, a past editor of Writer's Digest who is currently a freelance editor, has evaluated manuscripts for dozens of clients.   She has also served as editorial director of Writer's Digest Books and as an editor at Advertising Age magazine.  Melanie will lead the Writers' Retreat and a workshop called "A New Beginning:  Finding Yourself as a Writer."
  • MaryAnn Diorio is the author of four books and five booklets, and has had her articles published in over a hundred national periodicals, including The Saturday Evening Post and Decision.  Dr. Diorio's booklets include Writing Fiction for Children and Writing Nonfiction for Children, and her books include student guides to Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, and Mark Twain.  Her workshops will cover "Writing for Children," "Writing with Pizzazz!" and "Life Management for Writers."
  • Austin Camacho is the author of the Hannibal Jones mystery series and other adventure novels, as well as Successfully Marketing Your Novel in the 21st Century and Successfully Marketing Print on Demand Fiction.  A former broadcast journalist for the Army, Austin now does public affairs for a Department of Defense agency.  Austin will lead workshops on "The Basic Elements of Fiction" and "Nuts and Bolts of Self-Publishing."
  • Zena Dell Lowe, a co-founding partner and producer for Skirt Films, is also a scriptwriter, director, and actress.  Her scripts include the awarding-winning The Haunted Heart and Hard Shell.  She works as an adjunct professor at Covenant Christian College and teaches screenwriting and playwriting at various writers' conferences.  Zena's workshop will be titled "Hollywood Story-Telling Tools." 
  • Barbara Crooker has had four poetry books published, including More and Line Dance, and her poems have appeared in multiple magazines and anthologies.  A Grammy Awards finalist and Pushcart Prize nominee, she has also had her work read by Garrison Keillor on The Writer's Almanac.  Barbara will teach a workshop called "Poetry with Barbara Crooker."
  • Susan Reith Swan has been the editor of Story Friends, and an instructor for the Institute of Children's Literature, as well as director of SDCWC and the Western PA SCBWI conference.  Her book, LifeSavers:  Twenty Quick and Easy-to-Use Bible Lessons for Kids, was published by Judson Press, and her work has also appeared in numerous periodicals and anthologies. Susan will lead the Children's Writers' Retreat.
